Potential Benefits of Made-in-Japan Jet Planes

First Japanese passenger jet in 40 years may contribute to electrical and automotive industries

Responding to a call for "the first made-in-Japan passenger jet in 40 years,” a project to produce such jets was started in Japan. .The jet'sname will be called the Mitsubishi Regional Jet MRJ (MRJMitsubishi Regional Jet). . .Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a renowned fighter-plane maker who supplied the Zero during the Second World War and continued to develop and deliver airplanes to the National Defense Agency after the war, has suddenly decided to enter the civilian passenger jet market dominated by four European and U.S. . corporations. .Mitsubishi established its Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp, a dedicated airplane subsidiary, in April 2008, and is currently working on development at its development[??a dedicated] site in Nagoya with the goal of putting its jets in service by 2013...The time has come for the Japanese aircraft industry, which has long had to content itself with being a subcontractor to European and U.S. .aircraft makers and withan annual production value amounting to only 1 trillion yen, to go it alone.

Part 1: Unexpected Ripple Effects

Focusing on Software to Nurture Aircraft Industry May Lead to Safety and High Reliability Technologies

Japanese companies continue to enter the civilian aircraft market, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries with its MRJ, and Honda with its HondaJet. If these companies can nurture the technologies necessary for developing high-quality software through their development of aircraft, which require high levels of reliability and safety, such technologies will likely have favorable ripple effects on other industries such as electrical machinery and automotive.

Part 2: The Biggest Hurdle

Collaboration between Government and Private Sector Essential for Obtaining Model Certification and Entering the Global Market

For the electrical machinery and automotive industries to enjoy the technological ripple effects from made-in-Japan jet planes, the passenger jet project must first succeed as a business.. For Japan, where no passenger aircraft have been developed for the past 40 years, the biggest hurdle will be model certification by the government, based on aircraft safety examination.

Part 3: Aircraft Software

For DO-178B, Focus on Requirements and Testing; For Safety Evaluation, Other Standards

How is software for aircraft created? Here, DO-178B, which is the software development guideline for aircraft, forms the foundation. .DO-178B is permeated with the concept of focusing on reliability by ensuring requirement traceability and thorough software testing, and its use is beginning to expand beyond the aircraft industry to include, for example, the automotive industry.

Battle Underway to Control the Next-Generation Generation U.S. . EPG Market

The crucial point is how to utilize the three technologies and incorporate user interface

As more and more TVs are connected to the Internet, the era is approaching when viewers will be able to enjoy a larger numbermany thousands of more of video titles by an order of magnitude than ever before, namely several thousand to tens of thousands of videos. .One issue that will most likely crop up when such an era arrives will be providing users with a means to search for their favorite video content. . .Conventional electronic program guides EPGs (electronic program guidesEPGs), which are based on program tables, will be too difficult to use since the number of available video titles will become too large. .In the U.S., where connection between TVs and the Internet is occurring one step ahead of other countries, full-scale efforts to develop next-generation EPGs have begun in order to solve this problem...We report on the latest situation surrounding next-generation EPGs in the U.S.

Wind Power Facing Stiff Headwind; Could Batteries Become the Savior?

Riding the global wave of initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions, wind power is generating great excitement as a renewable energy source. .In Europe, the U.S., and China, there is an ongoing rush to construct wind power generators..However, a sudden brake is being applied to the introduction of wind power generators in Japan.. Surging raw material costs and problems unique to the power grids in Japan are behind this slowdown. .As a result, expectations are rising for batteries to become the savior for wind power generators, whose introduction is progressing slowly.

Origin of Innovation: Development of MatsushitaElectric Industrial’s UniPhier(Part4)

Matsushita Electric Industrial's UniPhier concept unifies the technical foundations (platforms) of all of the company's digital consumer appliances. .Engineers involved in the development of a Blu-ray Disc (BD) recorder decided 6 sixmonths ahead of schedule to use a 45-nm generation process technology, in order to incorporate the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC encoder into the next-generation system on a chip SoC (system on a chipSoC), "PH1-Pro." ” The engineers, after successfully completing large-scaleextensive circuit verification within a limited time, then faced further obstacles.

Introduction to CMOS RF Circuitry Design (Part 7): Optimum Design Method for RF Elemental Circuitry

To design a CMOS RF circuit, it is essential to optimize various elemental circuits for high-frequency operations. .Part 6 introduced a design method that reduces the power consumption of a power amplifier by raising the Q value of an on-chip inductor through the adoption of such means as an SOI substrate, etc. . .Part 7 explains a method for optimizing the designs of power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, and mixers.

Technology Trends in Switching Power Supplies for Flat-Panel TVs (Part 2): Full-Wave Current Resonant Technique Becoming the Mainstream

As CRT TVs are being replaced by FPD TVs, the specification requirements for power supplies are changing significantly. .Flyback power supplies cannot keep up with increases in the power output required by screen size increases or the efficiency improvements necessitated by panel thickness reductions..Part 2 describes the half-bridge full-wave current resonant technique, which can satisfy these requirements.

From Sweden: Biogas Project Making Progress throughout Sweden

Sweden, a European leader in advanced environmental measures, has long advocated an energy policy that does not depend on fossil fuels. Currently, the utilization of biogas has become the focus of attention there. Biogas is a type of biofuel produced from an energy source originating from organic matter such as living organisms. Since its use results in lower CO2 emissions than using fuels such as natural gas, expectations are rising throughout Europe for biogas to become the next-generation energy source to help reduce emissions of gases that cause global warming. Biogas is mainly used as an automobile fuel. For example, Europe has a plan to replace 25-35% of the fossil fuels used in the transportation sector with biomethane (a type of biogas) by 2030. Currently, there are more than 2,000 compressed biogas (including compressed natural gas) fuel supply stations (gas stations) throughout Europe.
