KEPCO to Collect CO2 From Exhaust Gas at Thermal Power Plant

The Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE), Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd (KHI) and The Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (KEPCO) will install an "energy-saving carbon dioxide separation/collection system" on the premises of KEPCO's Maizuru Power Plant.

They will set up the system as part of the "Project for the Research and Development of CO2 Separation/collection Technologies" of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and carry out a practical application test in or after fiscal 2019. This was announced Sept 19, 2017.

Technologies to separate/collect CO2 from exhaust gas emitted at thermal power plants, etc are considered as important technologies for realizing a low-carbon society. However, it has been necessary to reduce the amount of energy consumed at the time of separation/collection.

In the project, the energy-saving CO2 separation/collection system is under development. Thus far, (1) a solid absorbent for CO2 and (2) KCC (Kawasaki CO2 Capture) moving bed system have been developed. By combining them, it becomes possible to separate/collect CO2 by using low-temperature exhaust heat, which is unused energy.

In the practical application test, RITE, KHI and KEPCO will install facilities that can separate/collect about 40t of CO2 per day with the KCC moving bed system using the solid absorbent. The facilities make it easier to realize both a high economic efficiency and a measure against global warming by reducing the (1) energy consumption for CO2 reduction and (2) separation/collection costs, compared with an existing separation technology using amine absorbing liquid.
