Hitachi Zosen Corp announced June 26, 2017, that it has completed a biogas power plant in Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan.

The plant uses food waste from hotels, restaurants, food-processing companies, schools, hospitals, etc in the city. By using "non-dilution two-phase circulation methane fermentation system for food waste," which is a high-speed methane fermentation technology developed by Hitachi Zosen, it generates biogas and uses it for power generation.

The rated output of the plant is 730kW. It is expected to generate about 5,230,000kWh of electricity, which is equivalent to the amount consumed by 1,600 households, per year.
