Toyota Lowers Front Hood of 'Camry' Sedan, Expands Field of View

For the Camry mid-size sedan that Toyota Motor Corp released July 10, 2017, the company succeeded in lowering the height of the front hood by about 40mm, compared with the previous model (Toyota Fully Remodels 'Camry' Sedan).

As a result, the front field of view of the driver was expanded, reducing mental stress at the time of driving the vehicle.

The driver's seat surface of the Camry, which is a sedan-type vehicle, is lower than those of other kinds of vehicles such as minivans and SUVs (sport-utility vehicles). Therefore, in many cases, the steering wheel, the hood of the center meters, etc enter the driver's field of view. Also, the front hood often enters the field of view, making it difficult to improve visibility and ride comfort.

Toyota applied the "TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture)" design method, which shares auto parts across segments, to the Camry in the aim of reforming its platform and power train. By changing the designs of parts surrounding the engine, the company succeeded in reducing the size of each part, making it easier to lower the height of the front hood.

Tilted suspensions

"We made efforts to reduce the sizes of many of the parts in the engine compartment," Toyota said. "But the lowering of the front suspension top especially contributed to lowering the height of the front hood."

This time, Toyota changed the installation angle of the front suspensions. Each of the right and left suspensions was tilted by several degrees to the inner side of the vehicle and by several degrees to the rear side, compared with the previous model. As a result, the company succeeded in making space between the front suspension top and the front hood, making it possible to lower the front hood.

For the new model, Toyota employed a strut-type front suspension, as in the case of the previous model. It only requires one low arm, reducing weight and making it easier to reduce costs.
