Continued from Toward a Fusion of TV and the Web: Google TV Coming this Autumn

Rishi Chandra, Google TV Product Manager, Google Inc.

Companies like Sony and Panasonic Corp. of Japan already market TVs that let you watch YouTube videos, but Google TV is different in two important ways.

First, Google TV provides users with a seamless fusion of TV and Web experiences. Using the Quick Search Box yields results covering both TV programs and Web sites, without discrimination. If you select a TV program it is displayed, and if you select a Web site, it opens. The user no longer has to worry about who is providing the content.

Second is the fact that there are no restrictions on the Web sites that can be displayed. Google TV runs the same Chrome browser used in PCs, and also has Flash 10.1 to let users enjoy multimedia content. Between them, they make it possible to watch almost all the content available on the Web today. It's also very simple to adjust the display so you can visit Web sites while simultaneously watching TV.

Sony and Logitech products will come with hardware keyboards usable as input devices. We also plan to provide dedicated apps to allow iPhones and Android terminals to be used as remotes for Google TV.

The Google TV platform is scheduled to go open source in summer 2011, which means that eventually anyone will be able to develop add-ins. We expect a wide range of innovative products from partner firms.
