Q: Tablet computers are not very new anymore.Microsoft Corp.of the US,for example, has been working on them for years. So why are you so interested in tablets all of a sudden?

A: I think tablets are a bit different from the computers we've seen so far. They are a new breed, combining high-resolution displays with touch-panel operation and portability.

The tablets that Microsoft spearheaded development of were relatively successful in business applications, but that's a pretty small market.Applications are changing dramatically, and tablets are now computers handling a diverse array of content including books, magazines, video and the World-Wide Web.

People spend the majority of their time processing content in one way or another.Tablets offer a new way to do this, completely different from PCs,smartphones or existing paper media. If video-rich ads are inserted into magazines, and readers can jump to related information, the act of ¡Æreading a magazine' will be completely transformed.I think we'll see a succession of new tablets with more refined designs, more beautiful images and long drive times.

The iPad from Apple Inc.of the US symbolizes this trend,I think. The technologies needed for tablets are all available now,and I think people who have been watching the technology evolve will be releasing similar concepts all at once.

The last decade was the era of the personal computer, the PC,which pretty much meant Windows. That's changing, though. We are finally entering the era of real personal computing,on computers that don't run Windows.
