The quest for wireless communications has seen healthy growth in the last few years. Despite economic uncertainty in these turbulent times, demand for communication devices remains strong, especially for products that are priced competitively. To meet the ever increasing demand from consumers in terms of portability, mobility, low energy consumption and affordability, manufacturers are looking to system-on-chip (SoC) solutions to provide the answers.
This article illustrates how SoC solutions from Infineon address the varying needs of consumers in three different market segments: voice, multimedia and mobile broadband. These solutions enable manufacturers to design and produce low-cost, high-quality wireless handsets with rich feature sets.
The XMM1100 platform solution is designed for the voice segment where end-users are extremely price-sensitive and require only simple but highly reliable voice communication. For savvy consumers who require multimedia services, the XMM2130 platform delivers both high performance and outstanding cost competitiveness. For consumers who are always on-the-go and need broadband Internet access, the XMM6130 offers them the necessary power and performance.
In addition to introducing wireless solutions targeted at consumers, this article gives an overview of how manufacturers can exploit the solutions to design products that meet the performance requirements for their customers. The challenges in SoC system design are also discussed, giving manufacturers an idea on the complexity that involved in SoC design.
