China's implementation of communication, computer and broadcasting networks, and its increased use of mobile phones, intensify the need for test, measurement, and monitoring equipment in the country. Tektronix currently manufactures products in China for local markets and for worldwide export and has design centers in Beijing and Shanghai, in addition to providing service and support in the region. Besides having a manufacturing plant, the company just opened its eighth sales office to expand the company's reach in the country, and our investment won't end there.
Tektronix is currently in the process of expanding its facilities in the region to match the investment China is making in education and infrastructure. At present, we are negotiating to lease a new plant in Shanghai. Such a commitment will allow Tektronix to meet the needs of not only local Chinese companies, such as Hua Wei Technologies, a major telecommunications manufacturer, but also multinational companies currently doing business in China, such as Lucent and Ericsson.
History of Partnership
In 1972, when US President Nixon visited China, the media brought Tektronix television test products to Beijing to broadcast the event. When the media left, they donated the products to China Central TV. Four years later, Tektronix sent experts to conduct the first television product seminar in Beijing and began officially selling our products through indirect channels. In 1985, Tektronix established its first sales office in Beijing. As China's technology base grew, Tektronix' investment increased. Before long, the company had established a manufacturing facility for oscilloscopes in the country, and today, we are able to even source most of our components regionally.
China has been one of Tektronix' long-term investments for many years. Its telecommunications (wireless, optical, and computing industries), broadcasting and educational test and measurement needs match Tektronix' core competencies well and will be key to the company's continued success in the region. However, we understand that we must continue to lead the way in technology innovations. We must partner with China -- in labs, on design benches, and in test facilities -- and we must work to help the Chinese government develop standards and to help shape a vision for the future.
Tektronix is the only company in the world that has the combination of video test, measurement, and monitoring knowledge that is needed to enable the transition to digital video. We've had measurable success with the Research Institute of TV and Electro-Acoustics (TVEA). Tektronix recently provided a variety of video test equipment to equip the country's digital television (DTV) testing lab, which will be the industry source for the verification of standards-compliance of DTV products in China.
GPRS Protocol Testers
The Research Institute of Telecommunications Transmission (RITT) chose to partner with Tektronix to develop a conformance test suite for general packet radio service (GPRS) networks. In China, and around the world, GPRS networks are quickly being accepted as a profitable approach on the path to third-generation (3G) services. China Mobile plans to roll out commercial GPRS services in 25 provinces over the next few months. RITT has standardized on Tektronix' protocol testers for all GPRS component manufacturers in China.
Our role in the future of enabling optical networks, 3G wireless services, semiconductor design, and digital video is to enable customers to design, build, deploy, and manage next-generation global communications networks and advanced technologies. We use innovation as the tool to enable customers to realize their vision of the future. Together, Tektronix and China have built a relationship based on mutual respect and admiration, a relationship that has been beneficial to each side for more than ten years. We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with China.
