IBM is expected to dominate Vietnam's server market in 2002, with an increase in orders for its latest server -- the p690, or "Regatta" -- from a number of government bodies and banks seeking replacement units.

Robert Lye, IBM's Web server manager for South and Southeast Asia, said on a recent visit to Vietnam that most Vietnamese clients appreciate the new generation of IBM servers because of their power saving features and their operational flexibility.

According to Nguyen Van, IT manager at Vietcombank in Hanoi, the p690 server consumes up to 57% less electricity and generates up to 63% less heat than the previous server. Nguyen also said that his IT staff like the new design of the p690 because of its flexibility.

Power Considerations

"More than ever, our Vietnam customers are interested in lowering their total cost, most of which stands in power charges," said Robert Lye. Regardless of the state of the economy, Vietnam's IT market always demands state-of-the-art technologies for building its e-infrastructure, Lye added. "We just brought out the p690 last October in the US, and just one month later many Vietnamese clients ordered this kind of server."

In general, electricity is usually in short and unstable supply in Vietnam, and many users -- even engineers and technicians -- fear errors caused by this. It is hoped, however, that the p690 server will help solve this problem.

"I am not able to announce an exact number of IBM servers in Vietnam," said Lye, "but more and more clients in Vietnam favor IBM servers due to their convenient technologies [and] reasonable cost." The eServer p690 costs US$450,000 in Vietnam.

IBM Vietnam regularly provides training courses for local engineers and technicians. "Since 1996 we have [run] a series of in-house training courses here in Vietnam," said Nguyen Hoa, chief representative of IBM in Vietnam. "We think this is the best way to bring the new technologies from IBM to local clients."
