Established in 1995, Servex is an IT distributor focusing on delivering information technology products and solutions to a wide channel base. Servex supplies a range of Acer-branded and third-party components and peripherals to the Australian market.
According to Johnson Hsiung, managing director of Servex Australia, "Servex is part of the Acer group, but operates quite independent of Acer's local operations. For our operations, we don't target the large corporate or large government markets in Australia, but cater for the SME (small- and medium-sized enterprise)and home markets. We also try to provide add-on services, rather than just move boxes."
Hsiung believes the Australian PC market is now quite saturated, and is virtually a replacement PC market in terms of sales.
"In this country we have one of the highest PC penetration rates in the world, and within the Asia-Pacific region, Australia now has the slowest growth in terms of gross PC sales because of this saturation."
Ownership Change
This year Servex Australia intends to operate its traditional distribution business -- working with vendors such as AOpen, Apacer, Anextek, Western Digital and ATI -- while diversifying their business into specialty areas such as storage. It is also changing, from being 100% Acer Australia owned to being 30% local management owned, with the remainder of the company being owned by a few key manufacturers and an investment company within the Acer Group in Taiwan.
Last November, Servex received its ISO9000 Quality Systems model accreditation for quality assurance in production, installation and servicing. Said Hsiung, "This means that our customers and suppliers can have confidence when buying Servex products based on an acknowledged and accredited international standard."
Servex Australia has created a data storage products distribution business, offering deals in value-added and customized solutions for all storage landscapes, ie, networked attached, direct attached, storage area networks, etc. Networking storage solutions will be offered by Servex with support from vendors such as Anextek, 3ware, Falconstor, and Gadzoox. The company also plans to deliver storage solutions and expertise to the reseller and integrator market in Australia.
PC Market
Andy Woo, PC Analyst for Gartner Group's Dataquest, said that the PC market in Australia is still fundamentally weak. "As a result of the current business climate, end users are extending the use of PCs longer than ever before," he said. "The market is basically in replacement mode, and vendors are finding it tougher to penetrate new markets or opportunities.
"However, overall our findings are encouraging. Seasonal buying from education and government markets, a growing whitebox segment, and better than expected consumer sentiment during the fourth quarter contributed to the overall growth in Q4 [2001]," Woo added.
