This agreement is the first time that Ericsson has licensed a design house. DNP is a photomask manufacturer for wafer processing, and has 30 years experience in IC chip design. Target applications for DNP include image processors and communication chips, such as for Bluetooth and wireless LAN. Bluetooth baseband chips depend on the requirements of individual users -- the voice function, for example, might not be required for printer applications.
The Bluetooth baseband core, together with the ARM processor core licensed from ARM Ltd in September 2001, will enable the user to obtain a proprietary baseband chip (ASIC) with quick time-to-market and a small chip size.
One major reason for DNP to have selected Ericsson is that Ericsson is a parent bearing Bluetooth interface. And one major reason for Ericsson to have selected DNP is that DNP is an experienced photomask vendor with design capabilities.
