The economic downturn affected many of the matured IT and electronics export-oriented countries and regions as well as those with economies closely linked to that of the US. PC shipments declined in Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines.
China's market share increased to 42.9% of the total PC market in Asia, up from 37.8% last year, widening the gap considerably over Korea, the second largest market. Other countries/regions grew due to the low penetration rate of PCs, a large domestic market and government initiatives on IT spending and home ownership of PCs. In Hong Kong, unit shipments dropped 6% during the year. In the fourth quarter, the usual peak season for PC sales, there was a yearly decline of 16%.
Regionally, desk-based PCs accounted for 83% of total PC shipments in 2001, with unit shipments growing by 10%. The market share for mobile PCs inched from 13% to 14%, on a growth rate of 23%. The current estimate is for Asia-Pacific PC shipments to grow 13% in 2002, with the professional market being the most precarious.
