To strengthen its Asia market, the company is supporting its licensees. Toshiba Corp, for example, has shipped an Emotion Engine, incorporating 64-bit MIPS core, to Sony PS2 applications, and plans to boost the product performance with finer line technologies -- 0.1 micron CMOS in 2004 and 0.07 micron in 2005 with 1GHz operation. Higher speed is required for controlling automotive and digital stills cameras in real time, according to Toshiba.
NEC also pushes MIPS architecture designed for digital consumer ASSP and network ASSP chips. Compared with the Intel 86-family and ARM core, NEC expects more powerful capabilities from MIPS architecture for multimedia processing in Internet and network applications. The company also aims at foundry manufacturers in Taiwan and Singapore.
