The contributions of energy efficient lighting to
sustainable buildings and cities Philips Lighting Green Switch Champion, Vice President Energy & Climate Change Harry Verhaar Just a few years ago few people knew anything about the dangers of carbon emissions; energy was cheap and seemed abundant, and economic growth was only spiralling upward. Today we have made a hard landing and are confronted with the interconnected global economic meltdown, energy crisis and global climate change. With buildings representing 40% of global energy consumption, and cities a staggering 75%, this is clearly a focal area for action. Of the 19% of total global electricity that lighting consumes, as much as 75% goes on in buildings and street lighting alone. Significant savings are possible by switching to energy efficient lighting. This will help to save energy and money as well as cut carbon emissions. In addition an accelerated switch to energy efficient lighting will make our economies more competitive and will add green collar jobs, a.o. by the renovation work on buildings and cities involved. This is a unique triple-win for all involved, and will make our cities safer and more enjoyable to live in at the same time. |

Small and Shaping the future energy eco house
system Tohoku University Graduate School of Environment Studies Professor of Designing of Nano-EcoMaterials Kazuyuki Tohji The appearance of Li-ion rechargeable battery overturns the common sense that the electricity can not be accumulated. I introduce about the battery of 10kW class, direct current feeding and the direct current use of the electricity from a solar battery, acquisition of the unused energy in the home and the applying technology. This is an energy system with the economy not a simple experiment. In Tohoku University, I push forward the construction of the eco-house for this proof. |

Panasonic Environmental Sustainability Management and
'eco ideas' House Panasonic Corp. Corporate Environmental Affairs Division Director Kuniaki Okahara Recently, concerns about environmental preservation represented by prevention of global warming have been growing. Recognizing that that an era has dawned in which companies without environmental initiatives will struggle to survive, Panasonic strives to contribute to the establishment of the sustainable society with high quality of life by placing environmental consciousness as an indispensable factor of all business activities. Announcing 'eco ideas' Strategy in October 2007, in which we see the reduction of environmental impacts in all business activities as one of our most important issues, we have promoted three 'eco ideas' initiatives. Furthermore, we opened 'eco ideas' House in April 2009 to show our efforts with a concrete example. The House proposes a concept of the lifestyle with virtually zero CO2 emissions, which will be realized in three to five years. In a presentation, Panasonic's environmental sustainability and the concept of the 'eco ideas' Ho! use will be introduced. |
